Hoe ik mijn kerstkaart maakte // The making of my Christmas card

Last week I promised you a ‘making of’ post about my christmas greeting card. Well, today’s the day folks!
This particular project was one of those that was nothing but awesome in my head and during sketch- and illustration-phase, but got me thinking ‘what the heck have I gotten myself into’ once the time came to photograph the illustration. Because strange little constructions had to be thaught up (which would not have ended well without John, who was my assistant during photographing) to get the job done. Then there was the light which is not that good around this time of year and the fact that I did not want half my illustration to be unsharp because of movement that was inevitable because all of the ornaments were suspended from a tripod-arm. Needless to say: it took quite some time to complete the photography phase.

But once the photography was done, I wasn’t too happy with the result. Yes, unfortunately that happens every once in a while too. Because after digitally removing the strings and tape, there was a whole lot of empty blue space left; more than I thought there would be. I still liked the idea of the card and the illustrations I had made, but I just thought it wasn’t good enough to go to print as it was. So then I did something I have never done before, but what I thought was necessary to ‘save’ this design: I digitally edited a different background into my card. And although I’m not a big fan of taking these digital measures (more about that and the way I work here), in this case it made me fall in love with my christmas card allover again. And because of that, the measure was allowed.
