Vandaag is het dan zo ver! Mijn eerste gastartikel voor Team Confetti is gepubliceerd. En aangezien er ook lezers van mijn blog zijn die Team Confetti nog niet volgen (ik kan je van harte aanraden dat wel te doen) plaats ik het artikel ook hier, zodat iedereen die dat wil het kan lezen. Veel plezier met dit eerste artikel, dat gaat over hoe ik werk.

I’m so excited for today you guys! Because today is the day my first guest-post for Team Confetti is published. And since on the Team Confetti blog it’s only published in Dutch, I thought I’d repost it here in English (and Dutch too for that matter) to make it available to all of my readers. So enjoy this post on how I work.

Het is een enorme eer om vandaag het spits af te mogen bijten met de eerste gastblog in de geschiedenis van ‘het nieuwe Team Confetti’. Maar als ik eerlijk ben vind ik het ook wel een beetje spannend. Ik ben namelijk een typische creatieveling: ik ben een klein beetje (of eigenlijk best wel erg) ‘socially awkward’ en ik praat niet zo graag over mezelf. En nu hoor ik je denken dat dat laatste nogal in strijd is met het feit dat ik ook blog over mijn eigen leven. Klopt! Maar laat ik het zo zeggen: via een computerscherm over jezelf praten is een stuk makkelijker dan in real life. Ik spreek uit ervaring.
Toch ga ik het vandaag nog even over mezelf hebben. Oh I know, I know: Olga heeft me vorige week al aan jullie voorgesteld. Je hoeft dan ook niet bang te zijn voor dubbele informatie. Want vandaag ga ik jullie wat meer vertellen en laten zien over hoe ik werk. Want mijn werk is eigenlijk net als ik: een beetje awkward.

It is such an honor to be the first one to be writing a guest-post in the history of ‘the new Team Confetti’. But to be honest, it’s also kind of scary to me. Because I am your typical creative person: I’m a little (or maybe even severely) socially awkward and I don’t like talking about myself. Now I can hear you think that ‘not liking to talk about yourself’ and blogging about your life are two things that don’t mix in that well together. True! But let me put it this way: talking about yourself through a computer screen is a whole different cup of tea compared to talking about yourself in real-life. Trust me on that one.
Nevertheless, I will be talking about myself some more today, even though Olga introduced me to you all on the Team Confetti blog last week. But today I will be talking not only about myself, but also about how I work. Because my work is actually just like me: a little awkward.

Ik vind het ‘nodig’ om hier wat over te vertellen omdat ik op familiefeestjes, netwerkborrels en andere bijeenkomsten vaak het compliment krijg dat ik zo’n goede beeldbewerker ben. Dat mijn illustraties eruit zien alsof ze echt zo zijn gefotografeerd in plaats van in elkaar ‘gephotoshopt’. Uuuuh…Thanks, but no thanks. ‘That is NOT how I roll’.

I feel ‘the need’ to tell you about how I work, because whenever I’m at a birthday party or network event I get the compliment that I’m such a talented image editor. That my illustrations look just like they’ve been photographed just as they are, rather than digitally put together. Uuuuh..Thanks but no thanks. That’s not how I roll.

Mijn manier van werken is namelijk voortgekomen uit één van mijn grootste ‘gebreken’: het feit dat ik niks snap van licht, schaduw en perspectief. Vraag mij niet iets realistisch te tekenen want daar bak ik dus niks van. Vraag mij dus ook niet om een illustratie zo realistisch mogelijk in elkaar te ‘photoshoppen’, want je raadt het al: ‘epic fail’.

Because my way of working evolved from one of my biggest ‘flaws’: the fact that I simply don’t understand lighting, shadow and perspective. Don’t ask me to draw something realistically, because I won’t be able to do so. So please don’t ask me to ‘Photoshop’ an illustration either, because that will be an epic fail.

Mede vanwege mijn gebrek aan realiteitszin (dat soms wel eens verder reikt dan alleen mijn werk, maar dat even terzijde), maar ook omdat ik niet al mijn werkdagen wil doorbrengen achter mijn computer heb ik besloten om al mijn 3D-illustraties ‘live’ op te bouwen en te fotograferen. Zo zijn licht, schaduw en perspectief natuurlijk en hoef ik mijzelf niet te pijnigen met het achteraf toevoegen van één van die drie factoren. Natuurlijk bewerk ik mijn beelden wel iets na in photoshop, maar alle 3D-illustraties die je van mij ziet zijn foto’s van een ‘set’ die ik heb gebouwd in mijn mini-keuken (die ik dus regelmatig verbouw tot mini fotostudio) of ergens op locatie. En die locatie kan overal zijn; in andermans huiskamer of gewoon op een muurtje ergens in Toscane.
Nog een beetje onduidelijk allemaal? Ik neem een aantal voorbeelden met je door, maar ik waarschuw je alvast: ook al houd ik van ‘mooie dingen maken’, deze achter de schermen beelden zijn niet altijd even mooie plaatjes. En geloof me, om het ‘perfecte shot’ te krijgen moet je soms de meest oncharmante poses aannemen. Op je buik in de duinen liggen? No problemo! Een arsenaal aan apparatuur, statieven, illustraties en tape rondsjouwen? Yes sir! Rare blikken van voorbijgangers krijgen? Done! ‘Anything to get the job done’.

Mainly because of this ‘lack of reality’ (that sometimes goes a little further than just my illustrations, but that’s a whole other story), but also because I’ve decided I don’t want to spend the rest of my life behind a computer screen, I decided to build all of my 3D-work as a ‘live set’ and then photograph it. That way, lighting, shadow and perspective come naturally and I don’t have to torture myself with adding one or more of these factors afterwards. Of course I do edit my images a little once the image is shot, but all 3D illustrations that are made by me are pictures of a ‘set’ I built in my tiny kitchen (which sometimes is remodelled into a tiny photo studio) or on location somewhere. This ‘location’ can be basically everywhere: in someone else’s living room, or on a wall somewhere in Tuscany.
Still a bit unclear? I’ll take you through a few examples at the bottom of this post (so scroll all the way down for some more images), but I must warn you: although I love making ‘pretty things’, these behind the scenes pics aren’t always that pretty. Believe me, you have to go through a lot in order to make it pretty or to get the ‘perfect shot’. Lying on your belly on the beach? No problem! Carrying around lots of equipment, tripods, illustrations and tape? Yes sir! Receiving strange looks from passers-by? Done! Anything to get the job done.
