WORK/LIFE 3

Voor het boek Work/Life 3: The Uppercase Directory of Illustration maakte ik bovenstaande illustratie. Het boek bestaat uit een opsomming van 100 illustratoren van over de hele wereld. Elke illustrator kreeg in het boek een volledige spread met daarop een illustratie die speciaal gemaakt is voor het boek, foto’s van zijn/haar werkplek en een interview.

Elke illustrator die een bijdrage heeft geleverd aan dit boek (100 in totaal) onderging een diepte-interview over hun werk en hun leven als illustrator. Op basis van dit interview heeft Janine (hoofdredacteur en stichter van Uppercase magazine en de Work/Life serie) elk van de illustratoren een eigen opdracht gegeven voor een illustratie.

Mijn opdracht was om een scène uit mijn leven te illustreren in mijn ruimtelijke techniek. Deze scène moest ik voor me zien als een etalage of een ‘still’ uit een animatiefilm.

Leuk detail: Ik maakte deze illustratie toen mijn illustratieve handschrift (de 3D techniek die ik in veel van mijn werk toepas) pas net echt vorm had gekregen. Deze illustratie is een van de (of misschien wel echt de) eerste publicatie van deze techniek. Ik vind het heel tof om te zien hoe deze techniek zich met de jaren heeft ontwikkeld, vergeleken met recenter werk.

Deze illustratie is gebaseerd op de laatste foto op deze pagina; een van mijn favoriete herinneringen ooit aan dat ik met mijn vader de heg knipte en ik in de kruiwagen limonade dronk.

For the book Work/Life 3: The Uppercase Directory of Illustration I made the illustration shown here. The book is a summary of 100 illustrators from around the world. Each illustrator was given a full spread in the book, containing an illustration made especially for this publication, photos of their workspace and an interview.

So, every illustrator that contributed to this book (100 in total) underwent an in-depth-interview about their work and their life as an illustrator. Based on the outcome of this interview, the wonderful Janine (art-director and founder of Uppercase magazine and the Work/Life series) gave them the assignment for their illustration.

Mine was to create a scene from my life using my illustrative dimensional technique. I had to imagine it as a shop window display or a still from an animation.

Fun fact: I had only just landed on this creative handwriting, so this is one of the first if not the first publication of an illustration made in this style. It’s great to see how it has developed over the years, compared to more recent work.

This illustration was based on the last photo on this page; one of my favourite memories ever of my dad and I cutting the hedge and me sipping lemonade in the wheelbarrow.
