Joepie! Nadat ik jullie vorige week deel één van onze Californië avonturen heb laten zien is het vandaag tijd voor deel twee! Dit artikel staat bol van de woestijn, cactussen en…dinosaurussen. Echt.
Yay! After showing you part one of our California adventures, today it’s time for my second post about California State, which is full of desert, cacti and…dinosaurs. Seriously.
Death Valley
Ik heb jullie al een paar dingen verteld over onze tijd in Death Valley in de column van vorige maand. Voor wie dit niet gelezen heeft: het was er HEET. Op de dag dat wij er waren was het er zo’n 50 graden. Man, ik had op een bepaald moment het gevoel dat ik smolt. Maar het was het allemaal zó waard, want Death Valley is prach-tig. En als ik zie hoe veel verschillende soorten landschappen dit park biedt is het naar mijn mening alles behalve dood.
Death Valley
I have told you some of the things that happened in Death Valley in last month’s recap. For those of you who did not read it: it was HOT. To say the least. The day we were there, it was about 121 degrees. Boy, I felt like I was melting at some point. But it was all very much worth it, because Death Valley is absolutely stunning. And judging by the fair amount of different sorts of landscapes, it looks far from dead to me.
Petite Route 66
Het rijden van de hele Route 66 staat al een hele tijd op mijn reis-verlanglijstje. Hoewel dat niet het doel van deze reis was is het ons toch gelukt er een aantal mijlen van te rijden toen we van Las Vegas naar Palm Springs reisden. Onze reisgids beloofde ons gouden bergen van verlaten diners en vervallen neon-signs. We zagen één soort-van-was-ooit-een-gebouw en dat was het dan. We konden onze lichte teleurstelling niet onderdrukken. Tot we bij het legendarische benzinestation ‘Roy’s’ in het plaatsje Amboy aankwamen, wat wél precies was wat we ons ervan hadden voorgesteld. Hoewel de benzinepomp een glorieuze geschiedenis heeft is het nu meer vergane glorie, maar hey: het supergave neon-sign stond er nog en dat is zo ontzettend fotogeniek!
Petite Route 66
Driving the whole Route 66 has been on my travel-wishlist for a long time. Although that was not the intention of this trip, we could actually drive a few miles along the 66 when traveling from Las Vegas to Palm Springs. Our travelguide promised loads of abandoned diners and broken neon signs. We found one broken-down has-been venue along the few miles we drove the route and that was about it. We were sort of diappointed about that, until we reached the famous ‘Roy’s’ gas station in the town of Amboy. This place has a rich history which is just a bunch of faded glory nowadays. But hey; the super-awesome neon sign is still there and it is soooo photogenic!
Joshua Tree National Park
Het heeft een paar pogingen gekost maar uiteindelijk is het ons toch gelukt om Joshua Tree National Park te bezoeken. Hoe dan? Nou, we verbleven een aantal dagen in Palm Springs, wat echt een oase middenin de woestijn moest zijn. Dat is het ook, maar niet toen wij er waren. We keken ontzettend uit naar even een paar dagen niks doen (buiten Joshua Tree National Park bezoeken) en lekker aan het zwembad hangen. Dat ging niet helemaal volgens plan, want net die paar dagen dat wij in Palm Springs waren werd het gebied getroffen door hevige regen en onweer met kans op overstromingen. En bedankt. Weinig zwembad-hangen voor ons dus. We hebben op een dag gepoogd Joshua Tree te bezoeken, maar eenmaal daar aangekomen (door een hoosbui op de snelweg die echt niet grappig was) werden we door een park ranger teruggestuurd omdat ze onze veiligheid in het park die dag niet konden garanderen. Toen zijn we maar gaan bowlen en naar de bioscoop gegaan. Gelukkig was het de volgende dag beter weer en dus keerden we terug naar Josia Tree National Park. En wat ben ik blij dat we dat hebben gedaan. Het is daar echt schitterend, de Cholla Cactus Garden in het bijzonder. Deze cactussen zien er super aaibaar uit, maar zijn ronduit ‘evil’.
Joshua Tree National Park
We had to give it a few goes, but eventually we managed to visit Josuha Tree National Park. Why? Well, we stayed in Palm Springs for a few days, which is supposed to be a desert resort. We were very much looking forward to chilling by the pool and not doing much for a few days (except visit Joshua Tree National Park). That didn’t quite work out as planned, since throughout our whole stay in Palm Springs there were rain- and thunderstorms and flashfloods all over the place. Thank you. No pool-hanging for us. We travelled out to Josua Tree one day and once we were there (through heavy rain on the highway, which was no joke), one of the park rangers advised us to come back another day, since it might not be safe to enter the park. So instead we went bowling and we went to the cinema. Luckily, the next day the weather was good, so we headed back out to Joshua Tree National Park and I’m so glad we did. It is absolutely amazing, especially the Cholla Cactus garden. These Cacti look so cuddly when in fact they are seriously evil.
De dinosaurussen van Cabazon
Op weg naar Los Angeles (waarover volgende week meer) kwamen we deze ENORME dinosaurussen tegen (wie mijn artikel over onze selfies heeft gelezen komt ze misschien bekend voor). We móesten gewoon even de auto uit om wat foto’s te maken. En het leukste is nog dat in de buik van één van deze dinosaurussen een winkeltje zat waarin allerlei soorten plastic dinosaurusjes verkocht werden. Super tof!
The Dinosaurs of Cabazon
On our way to Los Angeles (which I will be telling you about next week) we came across these HUGE dinosaurs (for those of you who have seen my post about our selfies, they might look familiar). We just had to get out of the car and take some pictures. The best part is, one of those dinosaurs actually has a shop in it’s belly, in which they sell all kinds of plastic dinosaurs. Awesome!
