2013 is nogal een jaar geweest voor mij. Ik studeerde af aan de kunstacademie en heb mijn weg gezocht (met vallen en opstaan) in mijn leven als afgestudeerd illustrator. Maar er is nog veel meer gebeurd afgelopen jaar. Hier vind je mijn ‘best of 2013’.

2013 has been quite the year for me. I graduated art school, which was a huge deal, and I found myself trying (and sometimes struggling) to find my way in life as a post-grad illustrator. But LOTS more happened over the past twelve months. In this post, you will find my ‘best of 2013’.

In januari verzorgde ik samen met Feito com Amor de cultuurnacht in Breda.
In january, I hosted ‘Culture Night’ in Breda, together with Feito com Amor.

 

In februari hebben we veel gewinkeld. In de kringloop wel te verstaan. Een veel terugkerend thema dit jaar.
In february I did lots of thrift-shopping. In fact; I did lots of that the whole year round.

 

Okay, deze is een beetje gesmokkeld, maar begin april (dat is bijna eind maart) was ik met mijn lief in Londen.
Okay, I smuggled a bit with this one, but at the beginning of april (which is actually almost the same as the end of march), me and my love spent a few days in London.

 

April stond in het teken van alpaca’s; ik won deze Velvetine couple shoot (tussen de alpaca’s!)

In mei was ik heel erg hard aan het afstuderen.
In may I was graduating my ass off.

 

En in juni was het eindelijk zo ver; ik studeerde af met twee projecten; ‘Mein Utopie’ en ‘Once Upon a Thing’.
And in June it was there; graduation! I graduated with these two projects; ‘Mein Utopia’ and ‘Once Upon a Thing’.

 

In juli was het feest; afstudeerfeest.
In july it was time to party.

 

Een groot deel van augustus bracht ik door in Italië, waar ik deze prent maakte.
I spent a big part of august in Italy, where I made this art print.

 

September was de maand dat ‘Work/Life 3; The Uppercase Directory of Illustration’ uitkwam. En ik sta er in!
In september ‘Work/Life 3; The Uppercase Directory of Illustration’ came out. With me in it!

 

In oktober bezocht ik het ‘Engaged’ event, waar ik de knoop doorhakte; op een dag ga ik de bruiloft-branche in met mijn werk.
In october, me and my boo went to the ‘Engaged’ event, where I decided that one day, I will be making illustrations for almost-married couples.

 

November stond in het teken van een groot geheim ‘project’.
In november, I did a big special ‘project’.

 

En ‘last but not least’; deze maand vindt Vuurwerk plaats, waarvoor ik de flyer mocht ontwerpen.
And last but not least; This month the ‘Vuurwerk’ event will take place, for which I designed the flyer.

 

Aangezien het bijna kerst is wil ik vandaag één van de mooiste kerstverhalen aller tijden met jullie delen.
Weet je nog dat ik in april met John in Londen was? Toen we daar de Tate Modern museum-shop bezochten kwam ik een prachtig boekje tegen genaamd ‘The Fir Tree’, door Hans Christian Andersen. Mijn interesse werd gewekt door de prachtige illustraties die erin stonden, (ik kende de verhalen van Andersen nog niet zo goed) gemaakt door de über-getalenteerde Sanna Annukka. Aangezien ik weinig geld te besteden had (what’s new ;)) kreeg ik het boekje van John (dank je wel, darling!). Pas toen ik het, eenmaal terug op de hotelkamer, ging lezen kwam ik er achter dat dit niet zomaar een boekje is. Het is een levensles. Een hele grote.

Het verhaal gaat over een dennenboom, die nog maar klein is en in het bos tussen de grote(re) bomen staat. De kleine dennenboom kan niet wachten tot hij groot gegroeid is en gekapt wordt om een kerstboom te worden voor de mensen in het dorp. Hij geniet niet van de zonnestralen, het subtiele briesje of de glinsterende sneeuw. Hij wil gewoon groot groeien en wegwezen.
Wanneer de dennenboom eenmaal een kerstboom geworden is vraagt hij zich af wat er vervolgens komen gaat. Hij geniet niet van de kaarsjes op zijn takken, de kinderen die om hem heen dansen of de warmte van het huis waarin hij terecht is gekomen.

Pas als hij afgedankt in een donker hoekje op zolder wordt gezet realiseert hij zich hoe gelukkig hij geweest is, zowel in het bos als toen hij een kerstboom mocht zijn. Maar toen was het te laat. Hij wordt van de zolder gehaald en in de zomer op de brandstapel gegooid. Een van de meest aangrijpende quotes in dit boek (voor mij, althans) is deze, wanneer het vuur is aangestoken, de boom in stukjes wordt gehakt en hij zich realiseert; ‘It’s over, it’s over! If only I had enjoyed it while I could. It’s over, it’s over!’

En dat citaat is een mega levensles voor mij. Ja, ik ben schuldig. Ik ren altijd rond (soms als kip zonder kop), mezelf concentrerend op wat er volgt en wat ik nog moet doen en wanneer alles voorbij is word ik nostalgisch. Vaak vergeet ik simpelweg van de momenten te genieten wanneer ze plaatshebben. In plaats daarvan blijf ik rennen en haasten en terugkijken en zeggen; ‘Ja, dat was leuk, hè’. Terwijl ik op het moment zelf alleen maar denk aan alle klusjes die ik nog moet doen, mijn eindeloze ‘to-do-list’ en waar ik een jaar later zou zijn.
Dus mensen, alsjeblieft, geniet van de feestdagen wanneer ze er zijn want ze zijn voorbij voor je het weet. Ik beloof dat ik ook mijn best zal doen. Fijne kerst!

Since it’s almost Christmas, I would like to share with you one of the most beautiful Christmas stories I know.
Remember when I went to London with John this april? When we visited the Tate Modern museum-shop, I came across a book called ‘The Fir Tree’ by Hans Christian Andersen. I was drawn to the wonderful illustrations in it (I wasn’t really familiar with the stories of Andersen yet), made by the immensely talented Sanna Annukka. Since I was on a budget (I’m never not, actually), John bought me the book (thanks, darling!) and it wasn’t until I started reading it back in our hotel-room that I realised that this is not just a book. It’s a life lesson. A big one.

The story is about a fir tree, that’s still quite small and stands in the forest next to bigger trees. The little fir tree can’t wait to grow up and be cut down in order to become a Christmas tree for the people in the village. It does not enjoy the rays of sunlight, the subtle breeze or the glittering snow. It just wants to grow and leave.

Once it has become a Christmas tree, it keeps on wondering what will happen next; not enjoying the candles on it’s branches, the children dancing around it or the warmth of the home it has come to.

It’s not until it’s left discarded in the attic that it realizes how happy it has been, both in the forest and in the living room as a Christmas tree. It’s just that then it’s too late. It’s being dragged down from the attic and burned up in the summer of the next year. One of the most touching quotes in this book to me is probably this one, when the fire is lit, the tree is being chopped into pieces and it realizes; ‘It’s over, it’s over! If only I had enjoyed it while I could. It’s over, it’s over!’

And that very quote is one hell of a life-lesson to me. Yes, I plea guilty. I’m always running around, focusing on what will be next and being nostalgic after it all happened. I often just plainly forget to enjoy the moments while they actually happen. Instead, I just keep running and hurrying my life forward and I look back and say; ‘Ah, that was great wasn’t it?’. While at the moment the event actually took place, I was just thinking about all the errands I had to run, all the tasks I had on my to do list and where I would be a year from then.
So please, people; enjoy these holidays as they come and enjoy them while you can, because they will be over before you know it. I promise I will try too. Merry Christmas!

Hoewel de hoofden van veel van mijn buitenlandse lezers inmiddels overgenomen zijn door de kerstgedachte, hebben wij in Nederland nog een groot feest te gaan voordat we ons voor de volle 100% op kerst kunnen gaan richten; Sinterklaas! Vandaag wil ik met jullie een speculaas-recept delen. Although many of my international readers will have solely Christmas on their minds, here in the Netherlands we have one more big holiday to tackle before we can start thinking about Christmas, which is ‘Sinterklaas’. Along with Sinterklaas come many typically Dutch treats, one of which is ‘Speculaas’ (kind of ginger-bread-ish, I suppose). Today I want to share this Speculaas recipe with you. (It is completely in Dutch, sorry international readers!).
